Gary Lloyd was born and educated in Los
Angeles, California. He earned his BFA and MFA from the Otis
Art Institute and later taught at UCLA. There, in 1979, as a
response to the developing fields of multimedia and site-specific
art, he formed, with other artists, the New Genre Department.
He continued to produce his own sculpture and painting and was
honored to be one of 12 artists selected to serve on the Artists
Council for the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art during
its formation.
In 1983, Gary and Karen Kristin initiated a scenic backdrop
company in Hollywood where they primarily painted sky images.
Gary has continued with several businesses in the Los Angeles
area; Sky Drops, Inc. specializes in large and small backdrops
both hand-painted and digital, while Really Big Skies has provided
sky paintings for such projects as The Silver Legacy in Reno
and The Reserve in Henderson. In 1998, Gary rejoined Karen and
the SKY ART team to help paint the sky at the Venetian. At the
present time, he is making art in his studio and expanding his
design skills with digital and lighting projection systems.
Gary divides his time between in his studio in downtown Los
Angeles and his ranch in New Mexico. He reads and draws with
his young sons, Cole and Skyler, and is learning to speak the
Navajo language, Diné Bizaad. Fly-fishing is a passion
of Garys, and he enjoys working the McCloud River in Northern
California and undisclosed portions of the Clarks
Fork in Montana.
