We knew in advance that this temporary meeting hall would eventually, when funds to build the "real" church were raised, become a gymnasium. In the meantime, to solve the acoustical problems of a cavernous box, twenty-seven 4' x 12' sound reducing panels were suspended from the walls and arranged around three sides of the huge room. In order to make the brocade covered panels more visually interesting, Jerry Patterson of Lee Architects designed an abstract geometric graphic reminiscent of wings and flight that would move fluently across all panels. The large size and number of the panels, the porosity of the surface being painted, and the blowup and transfer of the design all contributed to the complexity of this project. However, the final result was both effective and beautiful.
